TeanGeo2024 International Conference Kicks Off Today in Tunisia.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Fourth International Conference on Advanced Geospatial Science & Technology (TeanGeo 2024) officially began at the Laico Hotel in Tunis. Under the authority of the Tunisian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the event aims to promote the growth of geospatial science and technology in North Africa and beyond. Organised by the Regional Center for Remote Sensing of North African States (CRTEAN), the conference runs from October 22 to 24, 2024, and includes an accompanying exhibition that showcases cutting-edge advancements in geospatial science.

TeanGeo2024 has drawn the attention of over 300 participants from diverse backgrounds, including researchers, specialists, policymakers, and thought leaders from across Africa and the global geospatial community. In addition, the event offers a unique platform for geospatial and Earth Observation (EO) experts, decision-makers in government agencies, academics, international organisations, and private companies to exchange ideas, explore innovations, and discuss the latest industry trends. With a focus on space technology and its applications in sustainable development, the conference aligns with CRTEAN’s broader mission to advance geospatial science in the region.

Opening Ceremony Highlights

The kickoff event featured an impressive lineup of distinguished guests, including the Libyan Minister of Planning, Mohammed Al-Zaidani; the Libyan Minister of Housing and Construction, Abu Baker Al-Ghawi; the Deputy Ministers of Housing and Construction and Environment from Libya; and a Tunisian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research representative.

High-level representatives from key organisations, such as the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the African Space Agency, the GMES & Africa Project, and the Coastal and Sahara Observatory, also participated, underscoring the conference’s international significance.

Additional attendees included the Executive Secretary of the Arab Scientific Research Councils Union, the Director of the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi, Kenya, along with several ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, deans, heads of departments, university representatives, and research centre directors.

Throughout the inaugural session, a series of speeches set the tone for the three-day event. Speakers emphasised the critical role of geospatial science and Earth Observation technologies in tackling pressing global issues such as climate change, urban planning, and environmental protection. The representative of the Tunisian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research officially declared the conference and exhibition open, marking the start of three days of rich discussions, knowledge-sharing, and exploration of the latest innovations in geospatial technology.

Key Focus Areas of TeanGeo2024

Over the next two days, the conference aims to

  1. Leverage geospatial science for sustainable development across North Africa and other African regions.
  2. Showcase the latest technological advancements in the geospatial and space sectors.
  3. Exploring the growing role of Earth Observation (EO) technologies in critical areas such as agriculture, environmental protection, land-use planning, and climate change adaptation.
  4. Promote collaboration among government agencies, academia, and the private sector to accelerate African geospatial innovation and implementation.

The aim is to set clear action points by the end of the conference that will elevate the adoption of geospatial science in the region and enhance North Africa’s contributions to global efforts in space science and sustainable development.
