TeanGeo2024 Concludes with Key Insights on Geospatial Technology’s Role in Africa’s Sustainable Development.

The fourth International Conference on Advanced Geospatial Science & Technology, TeanGeo2024, concluded on October 24, 2024, at the Laico Hotel in Tunis after three days of intensive discussions, presentations, and knowledge-sharing. Organised by the Regional Center for Remote Sensing of North African States (CRTEAN) under the authority of Tunisia’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the conference drew a wide range of experts, researchers, and stakeholders, highlighting Tunisia’s commitment to advancing geospatial technology across North Africa.

With attendees representing over 17 countries, TeanGeo2024 presented a broad spectrum of studies, innovative research, and field experiment results focusing on geospatial and Earth Observation (EO) service applications. Key sessions covered emerging methodologies, applications of remote sensing in environmental protection, and sustainable development through geospatial technology. In addition, this year’s conference also included a science and technology exhibition, offering a platform for scientific institutions, research centres, and specialised companies from diverse regions to present their latest technologies, tools, and research outputs in the geospatial field.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Mr Mahdi Galloul, a member of Tunisia’s local council; Dr Ahnin Al-Maawi, Libya’s Deputy Minister of Environment; Dr Faisal Al-Abdali, Director General of the Libyan Scientific Research Authority; and a representative from the Libyan Embassy in Tunisia.

Furthermore, the opening ceremony also welcomed Mr Mustafa Mimouni from the Sahara and Sahel Observatory, representatives from the African Union, Professor Anas Omran, Director General of the UN Regional Center for Teaching Space Sciences in France, and a delegate from the Nairobi Regional Mapping Center. In addition, their presence underscored the event’s importance as a platform for collaborative policy discussions, scientific exchange, and fostering partnerships across the African continent and beyond.

The conference concluded with a joint session where participants discussed and shared recommendations. Furthermore, these recommendations underscored the importance of regional cooperation in leveraging geospatial science for sustainable development and capacity-building, particularly in North Africa.

Dr El-Hadi Gashut, Director General of CRTEAN, delivered the closing address, expressing appreciation to Tunisia’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for his support in hosting TeanGeo2024. In addition, Dr Gashut also extended gratitude to the ministers of the Libyan National Unity Government, the conference organisers, and all participants whose contributions ensured the event’s success.

In conclusion, TeanGeo2024 highlighted North Africa’s active role in advancing geospatial technology and demonstrated how regional and international partnerships can drive innovation and sustainable growth.
