In a recent development reported by the Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), the institute has initiated income generation by providing ground station services to various countries and organisations.
This satellite data receiving service can receive high-quality satellite data up to 50 centimetres, utilising a multi-satellite data receiving station. The payment model for this service is structured based on the amount of time spent per pass or per minute used by the data reception station.
Dr Yeshurun Alemayehu, Minister of Innovation and Technology, officially launched the service at Entoto Observatory Research Center, emphasising its significant role in bolstering the country’s economic development. He commended the institute for its achievements in administering the data reception station and satellite operations sector, noting its positive impact on the global stage.
Mr Abdisa Yilma, SSGI’s director, highlighted the service’s success in generating foreign currency by providing services to over 11 satellites from diverse countries and organisations. He underscored the institute’s dedication, stating that the service operates round the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Engineer Melaku Muka, Head of Satellite Operations at the Institute, explained that the service allows users to save on infrastructure costs by paying for their time slots rather than investing in their data-receiving stations. This system accommodates large companies seeking global satellite data coverage, small satellite operators with budget constraints, and research institutions.
Moreover, the service has garnered significant interest, with countries and institutions expressing their intent to utilise it. Thus, the number of user satellites is expected to grow. In addition to the service launch, 12 researchers instrumental in implementing the service were acknowledged during the event.
Participants also had the opportunity to tour the Entoto Observatory Research Center, enhancing their understanding of the institute’s operations.
This initiative signifies Ethiopia’s strides in space science and positions the country as a critical player in the global satellite data market, fostering economic growth and technological advancement.
