Sonke Telecommunications has achieved a global milestone by introducing a world-first Layer 2 solution integrated into its OneWeb (Eutelsat) satellite connectivity offering. This breakthrough, powered by Sonke’s advanced core network fabric, enables rapid adoption of emerging technologies and customisable connectivity solutions.
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology deployment brings high-speed, low-latency internet to businesses and industries in remote and underserved regions. This innovation addresses latency-sensitive, mission-critical needs for mining, energy, security, retail, and government e-services sectors.
Kennedy Memani, Chairman of Sonke Telecommunications, expressed enthusiasm for the achievement, stating, “We are excited to be the first to bring this revolutionary solution that will benefit our customers not only in South Africa but globally. Sonke is now positioned at the forefront of telecommunications innovation, enabling real-time commercial transactions and expanding connectivity in areas where traditional networks fall short.”
The LEO solution surpasses traditional connectivity mediums such as LTE, VSAT, and microwave-based systems, providing robust and reliable alternatives in areas where fibre infrastructure is unavailable. Memani states this offering is transformative for industries dependent on seamless operations in remote environments.
The deployment posed significant engineering challenges. Sonke’s core team developed and tested a solution that ensures seamless traffic flow between its network, Paratus (a leading regional satellite landing station provider), and the OneWeb satellite constellation without compromising service quality. This required precise traffic engineering and innovative network design, ensuring a dedicated bandwidth that eliminates performance degradation due to oversubscription.
Memani highlighted the growing market demand for the service in South Africa and the region, emphasising that limited capacity has already spurred rapid adoption. In addition, early adopters stand to gain a competitive edge, leveraging 100% coverage in regions traditional technologies like fibre, microwave, 4G, and 5G cannot reach.
Furthermore, as industries increasingly prioritise scalable and robust connectivity solutions, Sonke Telecommunications is emerging as a leader, offering next-generation connectivity for businesses operating in challenging environments.
