Q-KON Successfully Implements Africa’s First Fully Operational Eutelsat OneWeb LEO Satellite Service.

In a press release by Q-KON, the telecommunication company has announced that following the incorporation of Eutelsat OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity into their Twoobii Smart Satellite Services, the first bank branch of a prominent digital bank has been successfully launched on the service, delivering continuous connectivity that is yielding tremendous benefits for both bank personnel and customers.

Given Africa’s unique connectivity and infrastructure challenges, traditional solutions often fall short of tailored solutions. Instead, addressing these challenges necessitates a tailored approach, exemplified by Q-KON’s Twoobii Smart Satellite Service in collaboration with Eutelsat OneWeb. The milestone signifies a noteworthy advancement in satellite connectivity across the continent. This marks a significant achievement not only for the prominent South African digital bank but also as the first operational LEO site in Africa.

The solution seamlessly integrates on-the-go connectivity with essential security protocols for real-time bank account and financial transaction data transmission. Q-KON’s unwavering confidence in this ground-breaking LEO technology is evident as they have chosen to implement the first installation in a flagship branch characterised by the influx of new and existing customers and businesses.

The Eutelsat OneWeb/Twoobii installation was intentionally designed as a fully operational site from its devoid of any proof-of-concept attributes. It actively facilitates various complementary processes, encompassing internal operational functions and external customer-facing services. These involve intranet operations, software-defined wide area networks (SD-WANs), branch online management, data backhauls, as well as the provision of staff and customer  Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) services.

The digital bank under discussion, recognised as a top banking service provider in Africa, is said to be pleased with the outcomes and is actively exploring the possibility of extending the implementation of the Eutelsat OneWeb LEO system to numerous additional branches. The Twoobii LEO service boasts low latency 50Mbps connectivity and a seamlessly integrated redundancy option for fibre circuits.

Furthermore, the complete Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) licensing has been successfully obtained, enabling customers at the bank branch to conduct banking operations without interruption, even during hardware failures or power outages. This ensures a smoother and more streamlined banking experience, as the primary causes of infrastructure-related transaction failures or delays have been effectively eliminated.

“This fully operational LEO installation is further evidence of the utility of the Q-KON Twoobii Eutelsat OneWeb solution in financial services contexts,” commented Dawie de Wet, Group CEO of Q-KON. “We look forward to continuing the roll-out of this LEO connectivity solution to more bank branches to benefit the customers of our leading digital banking client,” he added.

Where banking innovation meets the latest satellite connectivity service offerings, the results have the potential to transform both banking operations and the service delivery experienced by bank customers.
