On March 4, 1979, the Voyager 1 spacecraft made a flyby of Io, capturing stunning images of this moon of Jupiter.
The detailed images of Io represented the first time that active volcanoes had been seen on the surface of another world.
The images of Io helped scientists determine that Io is the most volcanic body in the solar system.Voyager 1 had launched from Kennedy Space Center on Sept. 5, 1977, with the mission of investigating the outer solar system and interstellar space. It left the solar system and entered interstellar space in 2012.

On its way out of the inner solar system, in addition to studying Io, Voyager 1 discovered two new moons of Jupiter and a thin ring around Jupiter.
