Mr Timothy Adi Ashong Appointed Director-General of RASCOM.

The Board of Directors of the Regional African Satellite Communications Organisation (RASCOM) has confirmed Timothy Adi Ashong as its Director-General. His confirmation occurred on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the 74th Assembly of the RASCOM Board of Directors held in Cameroon.

RASCOM is a Pan-African Satellite Communication Organisation established by 45 African nations to deliver efficient and cost-effective telecommunications and bridge the digital divide between the continent and the rest of the world. To achieve this goal, the organisation is utilising a regional African satellite system and other suitable technologies to integrate these services into existing and planned national networks, fostering the development of African countries. Furthermore, in this capacity, as the Director-General, Timothy Adi Ashong will lead RASCOM’s initiatives to enhance satellite communications and information technology services across Africa. He will collaborate with member states, partners, and stakeholders to further the organisation’s strategic goals and mission to close the digital divide in the region.

Prior to his appointment, Mr Timothy Adi Ashong demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the African telecom sector as the Acting Managing Director, leading the charge to provide telecommunications, direct TV broadcasting, and Internet access to underserved rural areas across Africa. With over 20 years of experience in networking, spectrum management, and satellite regulations, Mr Timothy Adi Ashong has proven his dedication to the advancement of Africa’s telecom sector. His academic qualifications, including an Master of Science (M.Sc) in Communications Management from New Buckinghamshire University in the United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering from All Nations University in Ghana, further underscore his commitment to excellence in the field.

Furthermore, Mr Timothy Adi Ashong began his career as a network engineer in 2002 with InternetGhana, an internet service provider in Ghana. in 2002 as a network engineer at InternetGhana, an internet service provider in Ghana. After seven years, he transitioned to the National Communications Authority, the regulatory entity overseeing telecommunications in Ghana, where he oversaw satellite regulations. In 2015, he was elected Vice Chairman of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the satellite sector (ITU-R Study Group 4), a position he retained through his re-election in 2019 at the World Radiocommunication Conference. Concurrently, he serves as the chair of the satellite regulations committee of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and holds the position of Vice Chair of the African Telecom Union for the satellite regulation sector.

Timothy’s leadership extends to influential roles within ECOWAS and African satellite regulatory groups, where he has played a crucial role in shaping telecommunications regulations and spectrum management on a global scale.
