Starlink, Space X’s satellite internet service, has announced that the service is officially operational in Liberia. This marks Starlink’s first market entry into Africa in 2025, laying the groundwork for more penetration across the continent. This license comes after the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) signed a one-year licencing agreement with Starlink to increase high-speed Internet access throughout Liberia, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
This move, welcomed by officials from LTA, signifies a key milestone for Liberia’s digital transformation agenda, bearing in mind that the country’s internet penetration stands at 30%. LTA’s Acting Chairperson, Abdullah Kamara, expressed his confidence in Starlink, highlighting its potential to boost Liberia’s internet coverage to nearly 100%. Additionally, other government agencies, such as the Liberia Revenue Authority, have received 50 Starlink satellite terminals valued at USD 162,000 to enhance internet connectivity across its countrywide offices.
Kamara added that the service will benefit key institutions nationwide, from hospitals to schools and government offices. “This means that town halls, clinics, and schools all over Liberia will now have the opportunity to sign on to Starlink services,” he said.
Liberia joins seventeen other African countries in utilising Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation to boost nationwide satellite internet services. The company will be operational in several other countries in 2025.
