KSA Launches Cubesat Training Course in Collaboration With Italian Space Agency.

The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has announced the launch of a two-week Cubesat Training Course, organised in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana). The programme is hosted at the International Space Centre for Space Education at the Luigi Broglio Space Centre in Malindi. Additionally, the training course will also run from October 28 to November 8, 2024, focusing on practical skill development in Cubesat design and technology.

Experts from the Italian Space Agency and professors from the Sapienza University of Rome lead the course, which provides participants with hands-on experience in nanosatellite development. Additionally, it builds on the foundational knowledge participants gained from the recent online “Understanding Space” training conducted in July and August. This online programme, organised by KSA and Teaching Science & Technology, Inc. (TSTI), introduced participants to essential theoretical concepts in nanosatellite design.

In addition, KSA selected five Kenyan university teams from the online training cohort with exceptional mission concepts to participate in this residential training. These included SimbaSat, AgMonSat, FloodSat, KilimoSat, and CombatSat. The group also consists of the Tafiti team, representing university students involved in the satellite development platform sponsored by KSA. KSA technical staff are also attending the residential training.

Programme Objectives

The Cubesat Training Course will equip participants with essential skills in satellite development, actively bridging the technology gap in Kenya’s space science sector. Furthermore, this initiative marks a significant step toward building indigenous technical capabilities to drive future advancements in Kenya’s space technology.
