On 9 March 2026, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) officially launched the Africa Business Innovation Lab (ABIL), set to position the country as a hub for space-driven innovation.
The event, led by Acting Director General Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey underscores the country’s commitment to leveraging space technologies as a catalyst for economic growth, resilience, and opportunity.
The virtual launch brought together strategic partners, including representatives from the European Commission Directorate-General for International Partnerships (EC-DG INTPA) and the European Space Agency (ESA), highlighting the initiative’s global collaborative framework.
In his address, Brig. Kipkosgey described ABIL as a landmark initiative for strengthening Kenya’s space innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
The lab will offer a dynamic platform for young innovators to address real-world challenges, collaborate with experienced mentors, and explore how space-based technologies can advance national priorities across critical sectors, including agriculture, climate resilience, disaster management, health, urban planning, and natural resource management.
As the first African country to host ABIL, Kenya will implement the initiative through a consortium of international and local partners, including STAM (Italy), Planetek (Italy), Corallia (Greece), Adanian Labs (Kenya), and LocateIT (Kenya).
The lab is expected to accelerate the development of scalable, space-driven solutions, tackle pressing development challenges, and unlock new opportunities across the continent.
