The Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) has unveiled a network of satellite data collection stations in Addis Ababa and key regional cities, aiming at advancing digital transformation and geospatial independence.
The Institute has brought the ten installed Continuous Operating Reference Stations (CORS) into operational status, which is set to transform development planning, infrastructure management, and critical economic sectors nationwide.
Urban Development and Infrastructure Minister, Dr Fanta Dejen, has highlighted that the newly launched stations in cities are crucial for urban development and significantly contribute to positive changes in data collection.
Furthermore, the Minister pointed out that the CORS network, with its high-quality data, will greatly support land management, construction, road development, and geophysical projects.
The data it provides is vital for decision-making in critical sectors such as agriculture, industry, and economic planning.
The newly developed CORS network and other satellite data reception stations will enhance land management and improve quality assurance for all data-related sectors.
The Space Science and Geospatial Institute has stated that its data stations will be integral for mapping and research, ensuring that geospatial information is accessible for the planning and development of projects across multiple sectors.
Minister Getahun emphasised that, going forward, collaboration and continuous development are crucial for the expansion of Ethiopia’s digital economy.
These initiatives align with Ethiopia’s broader vision to integrate technology and geospatial data across various sectors, driving the nation’s digital transformation and fostering long-term sustainable growth.
