Namibia Receives China-Aided Satellite Ground Data Receiving Station

The SGDRS represents a transformative national facility that will significantly strengthen Namibia’s capacities in Space Science and Technology.

The station will serve as a valuable resource accessible to various sectoral Offices, Ministries and Agencies, as well as institutions of higher learning and research organisations throughout the country.

Beyond immediate operational benefits, the facility is expected to enhance research collaborations between local and international institutions, thereby building sustainable national research capacity.

Once fully operational, the SGDRS will provide critical remote sensing data to support a wide range of national priorities, including improved natural resource management, enhanced agricultural productivity, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, and anti-poaching interventions.

The meeting concluded with the formal signing of the Handover and Takeover Certificate by Dr Mundia and Ambassador Zhao Weiping, marking both the completion of Phase I and the official commencement of Phase II.

This milestone reflects a further step in Namibia’s pursuit of technological self-sufficiency and scientific advancement, grounded in sustained international partnership.
